The Schottky diode or Schottky Barrier diode is an electronics component that is widely used for radio frequency (RF) applications as a mixer or detector diode.

The Schottky diode is also used in power applications as a rectifier, again because of its low forward voltage drop leading to lower levels of power loss compared to ordinary PN junction diodes.

Although normally called the Schottky diode these days, named after Schottky, it is also sometimes referred to as the surface barrier diode, hot carrier diode or even hot electron diode.

Tantalum capacitors offer several advantages over conventional multi-layer ceramic chip capacitors, such as larger capacitance in a more compact form factor and superior temperature and DC bias characteristics. Kingtronics broad lineup of tantalum capacitors include models that utilize a bottom electrode configuration, low ESR conductive polymer types, units with an open structure to prevent combustion and damage to peripheral components, and standard products featuring excellent mount ability and reliability.

ESR has been significantly reduced due to utilization of a conductive polymer instead of conventional manganese dioxide. In addition the conductive polymer type reduces the risk of smoke or ire compared with conventional products.

Gas-filled surge arresters operate on the gas-physical principle of the highly effective arc discharge. Electrically, surge arresters act as voltage-dependent switches. As soon as the voltage applied to the arrester exceeds the spark-over voltage, an arc is formed in the hermetically sealed discharge region within nanoseconds. The high surge current handling capability and the arc voltage, which is almost independend of the current, short-circuit the overvoltage. When the discharge has died down, the arrester extinguishes and the internal resistance immediately returns to values of several 100 MΩ.

The surge arrester thus meets almost perfectly all requirements made on a protective element. It reliably limits the overvoltage to permissible values, and – under normal operating conditions – the high insulation resistance and the low capacitance contribute to the fact that an arrester has virtually no impact on the system to be protected.

Trimming Potentiometers carry specifications for potentiometer category and actuator configuration. Industrial-grade potentiometers are protected by an enclosure, typically one that is rated by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA). Typically, industrial-grade products are gear-driven and have connector outputs. These Trimming Potentiometers resist the ingress of dirt and dust, and last longer than unenclosed potentiometers. Discrete-board components, another potentiometer category, are also commonly available. In terms of actuator configuration, choices include single-turn, multi-turn, and slide. With single-turn devices, the shaft rotation is limited to less than or equal to 360 degrees. By contrast, multi-turn Trimming Potentiometers can be rotated multiple times, with as many as 15 or 20 turns from stop to stop. Slide-actuated products require the user to move a handle instead of rotating a knob.

A capacitor only has an effect with in a certain distance from the device. The more you move away from the capacitor, the less it does. The Inductance, and Resistance (of the Trace) tend to increase. This is the reason the App notes recommend placing capacitors on the reverse side off the board - over the (power) pin. It's a trade-off between the (low Pass) filter effects of passing through a via or an elongated trace. How ever these capacitors placed out across the board do have an effect in reducing the impedance of the board ~ the power and ground planes. Assuming most of the capacitors on the board are 0.1uF by-pass caps, then placing 2uF or 4uF around the board helps the impedance.

Protective gaps are auxiliary devices which serve two purposes: (1) they isolate electrical equipment during normal service conditions, and (2) they provide a path to ground for surge current during arrester operations. Protective gaps used for interconnection of arrester ground, secondary neutral, and transformer tank provide additional protection to distribution transformers and improve continuity of service to customers. Protective gaps provide effective and inexpensive surge protection for the primary neutral of a system (grounded only at the substation) if the potential of the primary neutral is less than 350 volts (rms) above ground. Transformer tanks can be isolated from ground under normal conditions by connecting the transformer to ground through a protective gap.

When choosing a quartz crystal resonator there are many parameters that need to be selected. Many are fairly simple like the tolerance figures. However a few of the others need a little extra explanation. One is the type of resonance. Like any tuned circuit a crystal can have a parallel or series form of resonance as shown. This will have to be specified. If the crystal is to have a parallel resonance then a load capacitance will have to be chosen. This is required because any capacitance across the crystal will alter its resonance slightly. Typically this might be 30 pF, but it will be dependent upon the circuit to be used. Also the tolerance required must be specified. The closer the tolerance, the more expensive the crystal will be, so it is wise not to over-specify the item.
