MLCC selection: Just meeting the parameters is not enough.
The general decision-making logic for purchasing a product is: whether it can be used, whether it is easy to use, whether it is durable, and the price. In fact, this logic can also be applied to the selection process of MLCC: firstly, the MLCC parameters must meet the circuit requirements, and secondly, whether the parameters and media can make the system work in the optimal state; Besides, is there any defective product in the incoming MLCC and how reliable is it; Finally, is there an advantage in price and is the supplier's cooperation timely. -C0G capacitors have high temperature compensation characteristics and are suitable for use as bypass capacitors and coupling capacitors

With the changing economic landscape and evolving consumer behavior, industries will continue their path of digital transformation. This means that the demand for semiconductors will increase. This prompts chipmakers and governments worldwide to work hard in closing the gap.

TSMC, the world’s leading semiconductor foundry, has pledged to invest $100 million to increase capacity over the next three years. Samsung and SK Hynix have teamed up with the South Korean government and spent $451 billion for the same venture.

Members of the European Union have their plans as well. The UK government is yet to reveal what they are precisely, but the idea is to help the local chip sector grow its capacity in their supply chains.

Both private and public sectors are determined to end the chip shortage. However, many challenges (policy making, local and international covid restrictions, etc.) need to be addressed before things get going.

Industry experts were optimistic at first, expecting the chip supply to recover by the end of 2021. Historically, demand for semiconductors declines every fourth quarter of the year, which should give chipmakers a chance to catch up.

That is not the case so far. It appears that the decrease in demand is not big enough for foundries to make a significant dent in the current imbalance.

They were forced to revise their initial opinion, and they now fear that the chip shortage could last until next year, maybe even until 2023.

Kingtronics update new Catalog for Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitor

In the use of chip MLCC, many customers will encounter capacitor cracking, short circuit, burning and other phenomena, so how to deal with these phenomena?
First of all, we need to know the causes of these phenomena.

A. Crack (refers to the crack on the capacitor that causes the product to fail to work normally). This phenomenon is generally caused by low resistance.
The reasons are as follows.

1. PCB is mostly open circuit after external force.
2. If the non-capacitor body is impacted by external force, it may have short circuit or low resistance.
3. Too high applied stress voltage will lead to MLCC capacitor failure, generally short circuit or low resistance, but this kind of phenomenon should not be much in the case of sufficient allowance.

In this case, it is generally necessary to check whether the product will be vibrated or shaken when working, and then check whether the product capacity meets the requirements.
B. Short circuit burn out (refers to the damage of the capacitor in the PCB board, resulting in the failure of the product to continue to work).

The reasons for this phenomenon are as follows.
1. The model of capacitor package is not big enough;
2. Insufficient reserved allowance;
3. The voltage withstand is too low or the product current is too high.

If this happens, we need to replace the chip capacitor model and check the specific reason. Then choose to replace the chip capacitor capacity or model.
If you can't find a suitable model to replace, you can use the capacitors in parallel or series to solve the problem.
