Tantalum electrolytic capacitors now available have mainly three categories of the solid sintered, foil winded and wet sintered type.

tantalum chip capacitors are playing a dominant role in the markets along with the development of technology, miniaturization is in the ascendant and the ratio of chip type to all types of capacitors is growing, Among them, the sintered solid accounts for over 95% of the current total production, dominated by non-hermetical epoxy-encapsulated tantalum capacitor.

Solid tantalum capacitors have advantages of excellent electrical performance, wide working temperature range, good volume efficiency and various forms of encapsulation.

Tantalum capacitors are used in smaller electronic devices, including portable telephones, pagers, personal computers (PCs), and automotive electronics. They differ in terms of form factor, technology, and capacitance type. Leaded tantalum capacitors have leads for connections to circuits. Surface mount or chip tantalum capacitors do not. For both types of products, technology choices include single layer, multilayer, and wound. Single layer tantalum capacitors use a monolithic dielectric. Multilayer products are small in size and made of many layers. They provide good frequency characteristics as well as excellent temperature stability. Wound tantalum capacitors are built by winding foils, sometimes by hand. In terms of capacitance type, there are two choices: fixed and variable. Fixed tantalum capacitors have a nonadjustable capacitance value. Variable tantalum capacitors can be set with a potentiometer or other adjustment mechanism.

Selecting tantalum capacitors requires an analysis of performance specifications such as capacitance range, capacitance tolerance, DC rated voltage range (WVDC), equivalent series resistance (ESR), leakage current, dissipation factor and operating temperature. Capacitance measures the ability to store energy, given as C = K A/D, where A is the area of the electrodes, D is their separation, and K is a function of the dielectric between the electrodes. Normally, capacitance tolerance is measured as a percentage of capacitance. DC rated voltage range (WVDC) is the maximum continuous DC voltage that may be continuously applied to a tantalum capacitor at any temperature between the lower category temperature and the rated temperature. Equivalent series resistance (ESR) represents the extent to which tantalum capacitors act like resistors when charging and discharging. Dissipation factor (DF) is the ratio between the resistive and the reactive part of the impedance submitted to a sinusoidal voltage of specified frequency.

There are three main packaging specifications for tantalum capacitors: lead or termination type, mounting style, and packing method. Choices for lead type include surface mount technology (SMT), axial, radial, flying, tab, screw, gull wing, and J-leads. Mounting styles include SMT as well as through-hole technology (THT), bolt mounts, bracket mounts, and pole mounts. There are three main packing methods for tantalum capacitors: tape reel, tray or rail, and shipping tube or stick magazine. Polarized, non-polarized, and self-healing products are also commonly available.

Tantalum capacitors are under some conditions prone to self-destruction by thermal runaway. The capacitor typically consists of a sintered tantalum sponge acting as the anode, a manganese dioxide cathode, and a dielectric layer of tantalum pentoxide created on the tantalum sponge surface by anodizing. The tantalum oxide layer may have weak spots that undergo dielectric breakdown during a voltage spike. The tantalum then comes to direct contact with manganese dioxide and the leakage current causes a local heating; a chemical reaction then produces manganese(III) oxide and regenerates (self-heals) the tantalum oxide layer.

Tantalum capacitors offer several advantages over conventional multi-layer ceramic chip capacitors, such as larger capacitance in a more compact form factor and superior temperature and DC bias characteristics. Kingtronics broad lineup of tantalum capacitors include models that utilize a bottom electrode configuration, low ESR conductive polymer types, units with an open structure to prevent combustion and damage to peripheral components, and standard products featuring excellent mount ability and reliability.

ESR has been significantly reduced due to utilization of a conductive polymer instead of conventional manganese dioxide. In addition the conductive polymer type reduces the risk of smoke or ire compared with conventional products.

1.Large capacitance to volume ratio, smaller size, good stability, wide operating temperature range, long reliable operating life.

2.Extensively used in miniaturized equipment and computers. Available in both polarized and un polarized varieties.

3.Solid tantalum capacitors have much better characteristics than their wet counterparts.

Tantalum Capacitors are inherently polar devices and may be permanently damaged or destroyed if connected with the wrong polarity. The positive terminal is identified on the capacitor body by a polarity mark and the capacitor body may include an obvious geometrical shape.

However, some Series contain two capacitors connected (negative-to-negative) to form “non-polar” capacitors. Rated voltage  may be applied to these Series in either direction.

The low leakage and high capacity of tantalum capacitors favors their use in sample and hold circuits to achieve long hold duration, and some long duration timing circuits where precise timing is not critical. They are also often used for power supply rail decoupling in parallel with film or ceramic capacitors with low ESR and reactance at high frequency. Tantalum capacitors can replace aluminum electrolytic capacitors in situations where the external environment or dense component packing results in a sustained hot internal environment and where high reliability is important. Equipment such as medical electronics and space equipment that require high quality and reliability make use of tantalum capacitors.

Low-voltage tantalum capacitors are commonly used in large numbers for power supply filtering on computer motherboards and in peripherals due to their small size and long-term reliability.

Tantalum capacitors are manufactured from a powder of relatively pure tantalum metal. The typical particle size is between 2 and 10 μm. Figure  below shows increasing surface area powders. Surface area is expressed in capacitance (C) in microfarads (µF) times voltage (V) in volts (V) per gram of powder (CV/g) Note the very great difference in particle size between the powders.

The equivalent series resistance (ESR) of a solid tantalum capacitor is frequency dependent. The curves of Figure 6 are typical of the capacitor values noted, with measurements being made by contacting lead wires 1/4 inch from the ends of the capacitor cases. Since ESR decreases with frequency, AC performance at higher frequencies is considerably better than would be predicted from the 120 Hz ratings.
