What is Tantalum Capacitors?
Tantalum capacitors are a subtype of electrolytic capacitors. They are made of tantalum metal which acts as an anode, covered by a layer of oxide which acts as the dielectric, surrounded by a conductive cathode. The use of tantalum allows for a very thin dielectric layer. This results in a higher capacitance value per volume, superior frequency characteristics compared to many other types of capacitors and excellent stability over time. Tantalum capacitors are generally polarized, which means that they may only be connected to a DC supply observing the correct terminal polarity. The downside to using tantalum capacitors is their unfavorable failure mode which may lead to thermal runaway, fires and small explosions, but this can be prevented through the use of external failsafe devices such as current limiters or thermal fuses. Technology advances allow tantalum capacitors to be used in a wide variety of circuits, often found in laptops, automotive industry, cell phones and others, most often in the form of surface mounted devices (SMD). These surface mount tantalum capacitors claim much less space on the printed circuit board and allow for greater packing densities.

Tantalum capacitors are products that are small in size and can achieve larger capacitance. They were first developed by USA Bell Laboratories in 1956 and have excellent performance. Tantalum capacitors have various shapes and are made into small and chip components suitable for surface mounting. Tantalum capacitors are used not only in military communications, aerospace and other fields, but also widely applied in industrial control, film and television equipment, communication instruments and other products.
Advantage
The full name of tantalum capacitor is tantalum electrolytic capacitor, which is also a kind of electrolytic capacitor. It uses metal tantalum as the medium, instead of electrolyte like ordinary electrolytic capacitors use. Tantalum capacitors do not need to use aluminum-plated capacitor paper winding like ordinary electrolytic capacitors. The system has almost no inductance, but this also limits its capacity.
In addition, since there is no electrolyte inside the tantalum capacitor, it is very suitable for working under high temperature. This unique self-healing performance guarantees the advantages of long life and reliability. Solid tantalum capacitors have excellent electrical properties, a wide operating temperature range, various forms, and excellent volumetric efficiency. They have their unique characteristics: the working medium of tantalum capacitors is a very thin tantalum pentoxide film formed on the surface of tantalum metal. The oxide film dielectric of this layer is integrated with one end of the capacitor and cannot exist alone. Therefore, it has a very high working electric field intensity per unit volume, and has a particularly large capacitance, that is, a very high specific capacity, so it is particularly suitable for miniaturization.
Disadvantage
The capacity is smaller, the price is more expensive than the aluminum capacitor, and the withstand voltage and current capability are weak. It is used in places with high-capacity filtering. For example, tantalum capacitors can be seen near the CPU socket. They are mostly used in conjunction with ceramic capacitors and electrolytic capacitors or used in places where voltage and current are not high.
Filtering performance

Caution for Tantalum Chip Capacitor Mounting:
A. In mounting, confirm the rated voltage, capacitance, and polarity before usage.
B. Don’t cut off the materials of the capacitor due to the mounting space and other reasons.
C. Don’t apply an excessive force to the capacitor.
D. Do not use the capacitor that has fallen once on the floor.
E. Do not remove and reuse the capacitor that has been mounted once.
F. Connect the capacitors to a tester or multimeter carefully. Avoid applying overvoltage or reverse voltage to the capacitors.
TKT – Tantalum Capacitor - Dipped

The equivalent series resistance (ESR) of a solid tantalum capacitor is frequency dependent. The curves of Figure 6 are typical of the capacitor values noted, with measurements being made by contacting lead wires 1/4 inch from the ends of the capacitor cases. Since ESR decreases with frequency, AC performance at higher frequencies is considerably better than would be predicted from the 120 Hz ratings.
