Tantalum capacitors are products that are small in size and can achieve larger capacitance. They were first developed by USA Bell Laboratories in 1956 and have excellent performance. Tantalum capacitors have various shapes and are made into small and chip components suitable for surface mounting. Tantalum capacitors are used not only in military communications, aerospace and other fields, but also widely applied in industrial control, film and television equipment, communication instruments and other products.

Advantage

The full name of tantalum capacitor is tantalum electrolytic capacitor, which is also a kind of electrolytic capacitor. It uses metal tantalum as the medium, instead of electrolyte like ordinary electrolytic capacitors use. Tantalum capacitors do not need to use aluminum-plated capacitor paper winding like ordinary electrolytic capacitors. The system has almost no inductance, but this also limits its capacity.

In addition, since there is no electrolyte inside the tantalum capacitor, it is very suitable for working under high temperature. This unique self-healing performance guarantees the advantages of long life and reliability. Solid tantalum capacitors have excellent electrical properties, a wide operating temperature range, various forms, and excellent volumetric efficiency. They have their unique characteristics: the working medium of tantalum capacitors is a very thin tantalum pentoxide film formed on the surface of tantalum metal. The oxide film dielectric of this layer is integrated with one end of the capacitor and cannot exist alone. Therefore, it has a very high working electric field intensity per unit volume, and has a particularly large capacitance, that is, a very high specific capacity, so it is particularly suitable for miniaturization.

Disadvantage

The capacity is smaller, the price is more expensive than the aluminum capacitor, and the withstand voltage and current capability are weak. It is used in places with high-capacity filtering. For example, tantalum capacitors can be seen near the CPU socket. They are mostly used in conjunction with ceramic capacitors and electrolytic capacitors or used in places where voltage and current are not high.

Filtering performance

The performance of tantalum capacitor is excellent. It is a product with a small size and a larger capacitance among the capacitors. There are few competitors in the use of power supply filtering and AC bypass.

Tantalum electrolytic capacitors have properties such as power storage, charging and discharging, and are mainly used in filtering, energy storage and conversion, symbol bypass, coupling and decoupling, and time constant components. Please pay attention to its performance characteristics in the application. Correct use will help to give full play to its functions. For example, consider the working environment of the product and its heating temperature, and take measures such as derating use. Improper use will affect the working life of the product.

In the working process of tantalum capacitors, it has the performance of automatically repairing or isolating the defects in the oxide film, so that the oxide film medium can be strengthened at any time and restore its proper insulating ability without continuous cumulative damage. This unique self-healing performance guarantees the advantages of long life and reliability.

Vishay Intertechnology introduced the new TM8 series of high-reliability, surface-mount tantalum capacitors with very low DC leakage current down to 200 nA.

According to a release, the TM8 series offers a range of capacitance-voltage ratings from 1 microfarad / 40 V to 47 microfarads / 10 V in seven compact case sizes. The capacitors are well suited for long-term performance in critical applications including implantable medical devices, medical instrumentation, and military/aerospace systems. Special screening and custom application-specific options are also available.

The devices released are optimized for filtering, coupling/decoupling, DC blocking, and energy storage applications in medical devices such as pacemakers, ICD, neurological stimulators, hearing aids, and cochlear implants; medical instrumentation including patient monitoring equipment, automated drug administration systems, and imaging and diagnostic equipment; and military and aerospace hybrid microcircuit/multichip modules, smart munitions, GPS systems, sensors, and handheld portable electronic systems.

The RoHS-compliant devices feature an operating temperature of - 55 to + 85 deg. C, + 125 deg. C with voltage derating, over a voltage range of 2 WVDC to 40 WVDC.
