Since the voltage dropped across a Zener Diode is a known and fixed value, Zener diodes are typically used to regulate the voltage in electric circuits. Using a resistor to ensure that the current passing through the Zener diode is at least 5mA (0.005 Amps), the circuit designer knows that the voltage drop across the diode is exactly equal to the Zener voltage of the diode.

A zener diode can be used to make a simple voltage regulation circuit as pictured above. The output voltage is fixed at the zener voltage of the zener diode used and so can be used to power devices requiring a fixed voltage. Zener Diodes in Series With Loads
If you have a regulated fixed voltage - say 12 Volts from a desktop PC power supply, and you want to power something requiring a lower voltage, it is possible to simply place a zener diode in series with the load device. You would choose a diode with a zener voltage equal to the supply voltage minus the voltage drop across the load.
For example, if you have a 1 Watt 6 Volt lightbulb to power from a 12 Watt regulated power supply, a 6.2V zener diode could be placed in series with the bulb giving the bulb 5.8V, or you could overpower the bulb a little using a 5.6V zener diode and dropping 6.4V across the bulb. Heat would be generated in the zener diode so it is essential to calculate the power lost in it so a suitably rated diode could be chosen.
Using a 5.6V zener diode, and knowing the bulb draws a current of around one-sixth of an Amp, we can calculate the power loss in the diode (with Ohm's Law) to be just under 1 Watt. Therefore a standard 1.3 Watt zener diode should be up to the job.

A bridge rectifier makes use of four diodes in a bridge arrangement to achieve full-wave rectification.
This is a widely used configuration, both with individual diodes wired as shown and with single component bridges where the diode bridge is wired internally.

Tantalum capacitors offer several advantages over conventional multi-layer ceramic chip capacitors, such as larger capacitance in a more compact form factor and superior temperature and DC bias characteristics. Kingtronics broad lineup of tantalum capacitors include models that utilize a bottom electrode configuration, low ESR conductive polymer types, units with an open structure to prevent combustion and damage to peripheral components, and standard products featuring excellent mount ability and reliability.
ESR has been significantly reduced due to utilization of a conductive polymer instead of conventional manganese dioxide. In addition the conductive polymer type reduces the risk of smoke or ire compared with conventional products.
Gas-filled surge arresters operate on the gas-physical principle of the highly effective arc discharge. Electrically, surge arresters act as voltage-dependent switches. As soon as the voltage applied to the arrester exceeds the spark-over voltage, an arc is formed in the hermetically sealed discharge region within nanoseconds. The high surge current handling capability and the arc voltage, which is almost independend of the current, short-circuit the overvoltage. When the discharge has died down, the arrester extinguishes and the internal resistance immediately returns to values of several 100 MΩ.
The surge arrester thus meets almost perfectly all requirements made on a protective element. It reliably limits the overvoltage to permissible values, and – under normal operating conditions – the high insulation resistance and the low capacitance contribute to the fact that an arrester has virtually no impact on the system to be protected.
The capability of the surge arrester in energy dissipation against switching surge is well expressed by the magnitude of kJ/kV (arrester rated voltage). These values show the dissipated total energy per two shots of switching surge that the surge arresters can withstand thermally with these values. Where the energy capability is inadequate in our standard series.
Typical structure of surge arresters are shown in Figure below .The surge arresters are basically composed of the TNR elements, housing and associated parts with insulating gas filling as shown in figures. The hermetic sealing of the housing is constructed with weather-proof synthetic rubber. The pressure relief diaphragm is structured with special metal plate, which is ruptured when a sudden pressure rise occurs in case of the internal failure.
Tantalum Capacitors are inherently polar devices and may be permanently damaged or destroyed if connected with the wrong polarity. The positive terminal is identified on the capacitor body by a polarity mark and the capacitor body may include an obvious geometrical shape.
However, some Series contain two capacitors connected (negative-to-negative) to form “non-polar” capacitors. Rated voltage may be applied to these Series in either direction.
